The history of the Deutz-Kalker spa began with its construction in the year 1913 to plans produced by Verbeek, the director of urban planning. It was opened as the Kaiser Wilhelm spa one year later and up to 1918 it served as military baths for the Deutz cuirassiers resident there then. Part of the building was destroyed during the Second World War but it was made accessible to the public again after the end of the war and the pool, then filled with rubble, was finally cleared in 1947 and filled with thermal spring water from the source in Deutzer Rheinpark. The spa was closed in 1996 as the Claudius Therme thermal and wellness spa was opened. The listed heritage building with the former library and town mansion are undergoing extensive renovation and a new hotel construction with state-of-the-art appointments and facilities is being added.
